Attributes that belong to God alone are applied to the Spirit

Scripture places the Spirit everywhere at once, asks “where shall I flee from your Spirit” and says the Spirit searches even the depths of God, knowing what only God’s own Spirit could know. Elsewhere the Spirit is called eternal, without the beginning that marks everything created.

Couldn’t these verses describe God’s own presence and knowledge reaching out into the world through his Spirit, the way a king’s messenger carries the king’s authority without being the king? None of them require a distinct person holding these attributes independently.

That reading survives if this evidence stands alone, which is exactly why it does not stand alone here. A messenger who is himself present everywhere, who knows all things unprompted, and who has no beginning has stopped functioning as a messenger in any sense that word normally carries. A Spirit shown elsewhere to be a person, carrying attributes of this kind, stops looking like power on loan and starts looking like nature shared.
