The New Testament directs at Jesus the specific acts that Jewish monotheism allowed only toward God: worship, prayer, and calling on his name. And Jesus does not wave it off or redirect it to the Father.

Backed by 3 pieces of evidence

  1. Thomas confesses the risen Jesus, John 20:28

This is direct divine address, spoken to Jesus and received without protest. A creature who refused to accept worship, as angels do elsewhere in Scripture, would have corrected it. Jesus does not.

  2. Jesus is worshiped and invoked by name

Calling on the name and directing prayer to a figure are worship practices reserved for God. Seeing them aimed at Jesus, across several writers, shows this is the settled practice of the early church.

  3. Heaven worships the Lamb alongside God, Revelation 5:11-14

This is the strongest possible signal that devotion to Jesus was understood as worship of God, not idolatry. It places Jesus on the receiving end of the worship Scripture guards most jealously.
