During sewer repairs in the City of David in 2004, archaeologists Ronny Reich and Eli Shukron uncovered stepped remains of a monumental Second Temple-period pool (about 225 feet long), widely identified with the Pool of Siloam where John 9 has Jesus send the blind man to wash. For decades the location had been misidentified with a later Byzantine pool; this stepped pool matches the Gospel’s geography and period, though whether it is the Gospel’s pool or a separate, smaller one nearby is debated.
