Claim 3 of 15 · Case 12 · Jehovah’s Witnesses

The two-class system has no basis in the text: Jesus makes the “other sheep” one flock with one shepherd, every believer is born of God, and Christ is the one mediator for all, yet the Watchtower bars almost everyone from the bread and cup.

Drawing on Revelation 7 and 14, the Watchtower teaches that exactly 144,000 “anointed” people go to heaven to rule with Christ, while the faithful majority, the “other sheep”, hope to live for ever on earth; only the anointed may take the emblems at the annual Memorial, so the vast majority pass them untouched, about one partaker for every nine hundred present by the organization’s own count. The text points the other way. The 144,000 are described as twelve thousand from each tribe of Israel, male and virgin, details even Witnesses read symbolically while reading the number literally, and John hears the number and then sees a great multitude, the hearing-then-seeing pattern Revelation uses to present one group under two images. The “other sheep” of John 10:16 are brought into one flock under one shepherd, not kept in a second class. Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, all who are led by the Spirit are God’s children and heirs, and there is one mediator between God and all people. A system that keeps most of its members from the Lord’s table has to explain why the apostles never did.

  1. Watchtower teaching on the 144,000 and the “other sheep”

Documented from Watchtower sources, the two-class hope is official teaching, not an outsider’s caricature. Stating their view in its own terms is what keeps the response fair.

  2. 2024 Memorial attendance and partaker figures

This is the organization’s own count. The tiny partaker number makes the two-class doctrine visible, and coming straight from their report, it can’t be dismissed as exaggeration.

  3. John 10:16, Romans 8:14-17, 1 John 5:1 and 1 Timothy 2:5

Each verse makes universal what the Watchtower restricts to the 144,000: one flock, sonship for all who are led by the Spirit, new birth for everyone who believes, and one mediator for all people. The Witness reply, that the other sheep are a second group with an earthly hope, has to read “one flock” as two.
