Claim 1 of 5 · Case 01 · Historical Jesus
Scholars across the spectrum agree that Jesus of Nazareth existed.
One claim from the free evidence repository at apologetics.pro.
The existence of Jesus as a real person is not in serious dispute among historians of the ancient world. Specialists across belief systems, including agnostics, atheists, and Christians, treat it as settled. This claim is deliberately modest. It says a real man named Jesus lived in first century Judea and was crucified. On its own it does not claim any miracle happened.
Backed by 4 pieces of evidence
Bart Ehrman
Ehrman has no religious reason to defend Jesus’s existence, so his statement that the field is nearly unanimous shows this agreement isn’t driven by faith. It holds across the belief spectrum, not just among Christians.
Gerd Lüdemann
A scholar who denies the resurrection but still affirms that Jesus really existed shows that accepting Jesus as a historical figure doesn’t require Christian belief. It’s a position that spans the range of belief and unbelief.
Maurice Casey
Casey argued the case as a secular historian, adding another non-Christian voice to a consensus that crosses belief lines.
Paula Fredriksen
As a mainstream academic historian, her use of Jesus’s existence as a baseline fact shows this is standard across the field, not a fringe or purely religious position.
