Beyond Christian writings, several ancient authors who were not Christians refer to Jesus or to his execution. Together they show his existence was known and recorded outside the church. The strongest of these are early and independent. The weaker ones are included with their limits stated.

Backed by 4 pieces of evidence

  1. Tacitus, Annals 15.44

A hostile Roman official, writing within about 85 years of the event, independently records that the founder of Christianity was executed under Pontius Pilate. That’s direct, non-Christian confirmation of a real, executed Jesus.

  2. Josephus, Antiquities 20.200

This mention is brief and made in passing, which is why nearly all scholars, including skeptics, accept it as genuine rather than a later Christian insertion. It’s a Jewish historian treating Jesus as an already-known figure, entirely outside any Christian source.

  3. Thallus

This is weak, indirect evidence: it may be an additional early reference to Jesus, but only as a possibility, not as proof.

  4. Mara bar Serapion

Because Jesus is not named and the date of the letter is uncertain, this evidence is weak on its own. It’s a possible additional non-Christian voice, but not one to lean on heavily.
