Objection · Case 04 · The Trinity

Modern Oneness Pentecostals aren’t naive Sabellians. They say the Son is the human nature and the Father the divine nature in Jesus, so the prayers are the human nature addressing the divine. Isn’t a third-century version being attacked instead of the live one?

Response

A fair correction, and the modern version deserves engagement on its own terms. It still has to explain texts where the Son is a distinct agent before the incarnation (John 1:1 with God, John 17:5 glory with you before the world existed) and where the Spirit is sent by the Son. Splitting Jesus into a human nature that prays and a divine nature that listens also produces a Christ who is not one person, which is a different error the church rejected (Nestorianism). Naming the modern view and its specific difficulties is more persuasive than a historical label, and those are the difficulties.

This alternative protects the oneness of God cleanly. On this view God is a single person who appears in three modes, as Father, then Son, then Spirit. Sabellius taught a version of this in the…

Under Claim 11: The Trinity is the explanation that accounts for all the New Testament evidence about God at once, while each simpler alternative works only by leaving some of the evidence out.
