Objection · Case 04 · The Trinity

Bauckham is an evangelical Anglican. Isn’t citing him as the authority on whether the New Testament stays inside monotheism citing an interested party?

Response

Bauckham is a believer, and that should be said. But his divine identity thesis is engaged seriously across the field, including by Jewish scholars such as Daniel Boyarin and by critics such as James McGrath who reject it. What he is cited for here is the narrow, widely accepted point that the New Testament writers did not think they were abandoning Jewish monotheism. Even scholars who disagree with him about how they included Jesus agree that they intended to remain monotheists, and that is all this claim needs.

About this exhibit

This objection is to Richard Bauckham, scholar of Second Temple Judaism.

Bauckham argues that the New Testament writers work strictly inside Jewish monotheism and never step outside it, even when they say the highest things about Jesus.

Under Claim 01: The whole Bible, Old Testament and New, teaches that there is only one God.
