Hugh Urban, “The Church of Scientology” (scholarly history)
One exhibit from the free evidence repository at apologetics.pro.
The religious studies scholar Hugh Urban, drawing on Scientology price lists and church records, gives a conservative estimate of roughly 300,000 to 400,000 dollars to complete the levels up through OT VIII, measured in early 1990s dollars, with the cost of each level rising over time.

- Tithing at ten percent over a lifetime also runs to hundreds of thousands of dollars for a middle-class Christian. Are fixed donations obviously a larger sum?
The comparison deserves an honest answer. Tithing is voluntary, proportional to income, not a condition of receiving any teaching or sacrament, and most churches serve members who give nothing. Scientology’s fixed donations are required to receive the specific services that constitute advancement, are the same regardless of income, and gate access to the religion’s core teachings. Note too that Urban’s estimate is in early-1990s dollars and prices have risen since, which strengthens the point rather than weakening it. The dollar figure matters less than the structure.
