Scientology does not put its full teaching on the table at the start. The upper levels, called the Operating Thetan levels, are treated as confidential. The best known of these, OT III, contains the account of a galactic ruler named Xenu and of “body thetans,” alien spirits said to cling to people today. Members normally reach this material only after years of counseling and considerable expense, and they are told not to share it. The content is real and well documented through court cases and leaks, and scholars attribute it to Hubbard. The teaching point is not to mock the story. It is to understand that a member early on the path may not know it yet, so leading with Xenu in conversation comes across as a trap rather than an honest question.

Backed by 2 pieces of evidence

  1. Reference coverage of OT III, drawing on court records and scholarship

This supports both halves of the claim, that the material exists and that it is deliberately withheld. The fact that the Church has litigated to keep it confidential is strong evidence that the secrecy is a real feature of the system, not an outside invention.

  2. The Operating Thetan levels, described as confidential and costly

This confirms the revealed-in-stages part of the claim from a second angle, showing the gate is both money and rank. It’s worth building on what a member actually knows, rather than on material they may not have reached yet.
