L. Ron Hubbard’s life as documented in the record differs sharply from the account Scientology presents, and the founder’s credibility bears on the claims.

Scientology presents L. Ron Hubbard as a war hero, an engineer and nuclear physicist, and a man who healed himself of severe wartime injuries through the techniques he later taught. Independent records tell a different story. His university transcripts show he studied briefly and did poorly in physics. His naval record shows no combat heroics and lists no such injuries. Court cases and investigative reporting documented the gap between the biography and the documents. Since Scientology’s authority rests entirely on Hubbard, whether his account of himself is trustworthy is a fair and central question, not a personal attack.

  1. The documentary record

Because Scientology treats Hubbard’s writings as fixed and final authority, his reliability is not a side issue. If the founder’s account of his own life does not match the record, that is directly relevant to trusting his account of the spirit.
