Objection · Case 02 · Resurrection of Christ

Josephus records a man surviving crucifixion after being taken down. So survival wasn’t impossible.

Response

Josephus does record it. He saw three acquaintances crucified, had them taken down, and one of the three survived under a physician’s care. Notice what that required: immediate removal, expert medical treatment, and even then two of the three died. Jesus was flogged first, crucified for hours, pierced with a spear, wrapped in spices, and sealed in a tomb with no care at all. The Josephus case shows how unlikely survival was under far better conditions than these.

About this exhibit

This objection is to Apparent death, or the swoon idea.

The claim here is that Jesus did not actually die on the cross but passed out, then revived later in the tomb, so that his followers only thought he had risen. The strongest form of this view leans…

Under Claim 05: A real resurrection is the best explanation of the facts.
