Objection · Case 02 · Resurrection of Christ

Don’t the resurrection accounts contradict each other on details like the number of women, the number of angels, and where Jesus appeared?

Response

The Gospel resurrection accounts do vary on secondary details: the exact number of women at the tomb, the number of angels seen, and whether the appearances happened first in Jerusalem or Galilee. A perfectly harmonized account might actually look more like collusion than independent testimony (see Gary Habermas and Michael Licona’s The Case for the Resurrection of Jesus).

What stays constant across every account is the center: Jesus crucified, the tomb found empty, and appearances to named witnesses who at first doubted. Independent witnesses to a real event routinely differ on peripheral details while agreeing on the core, which is exactly the pattern here.
