Objection · Case 02 · Resurrection of Christ

1 Corinthians 15 claims 500 people saw Jesus at once. Isn’t that a suspiciously large, unverifiable number?

Response

It’s a striking claim, and it’s fair to ask for more than a bare number. But Paul isn’t writing a private testimony meant to be taken on faith. He adds that most of the five hundred were “still alive,” which functions as an open invitation: go ask them yourselves. That’s a strange thing to write into a letter meant to be read aloud in a church if the claim could easily be checked and found false.

It also matters that Paul says this within roughly two decades of the event, to a community that could plausibly still find some of those witnesses. A late, unverifiable legend doesn’t usually name a living, checkable crowd.
