Leaving Islam, called riddah, is treated by classical jurisprudence as a grave offense, and about a dozen Muslim majority countries retain laws that prescribe the death penalty for it, though enforcement varies and executions are uncommon. Even without a legal penalty, converts commonly face automatic divorce, loss of custody or inheritance, social rejection, and in some cases violence from within the family.
