Objection · Case 09 · Atheism

Even granting a cause, why must it be personal, or God? It could be an impersonal quantum state, a prior universe, or something we have no concept of.

Response

The step to God is a reasoned inference, not a proof. The argument for personhood is that a timeless, changeless cause that produces a temporal effect must either produce it necessarily and eternally (in which case the universe would be eternal, which it is not) or by free choice, which requires an agent. Critics dispute that dichotomy. The prior-universe option is addressed by the Borde-Guth-Vilenkin theorem, which constrains the whole chain of expansion, not just this universe. Weigh the personhood argument on its own terms; it is the step where the most is claimed.

About this exhibit

This objection is to Eternal and cyclic cosmological models.

If the universe has no beginning, it needs no cause of its beginning. Some cosmologists explore cyclic, bouncing, or otherwise past-extended models, and some simply treat the universe as a brute…

Under Claim 01: The universe began to exist a finite time ago, which points to a cause beyond space, time, and matter.
